Netbooks - Ideal Choice For Students On A Tight Budget

By Helb Mitceal

Notebooks and netbooks have become an indispensable tool for many students. I for one purchased a netbook a few weeks ago because I felt returning to my apartment in between classes just to complete schoolwork rather costly and not very convenient. At night or during weekends when I have work, having a netbook also allows me to make use of any idle time to study my lessons or complete school-related tasks.

Although there are plenty of budget laptops available, I bought a refurbished netbook instead. The reason for this choice is that I didn't want to spend a lot of money, being that I am supporting myself through college by taking part-time work and summer jobs. By getting a refurbished netbook, I can make the best use of my hard-earned cash, and have enough money to settle rental and tuition fees as well as cover transportation costs and utility bills comfortably. The refurbished netbooks for sale nowadays are priced twenty to thirty percent lower than new ones. I have also seen refurbished netbooks that are sold at half their original price, but these are in most cases, systems that are three to five years old.

Since the tasks I intend to do on the netbook are limited to checking emails, surfing the net, and typing assignments, I didn't need a very powerful system. Just the same, I wanted one with at least 250 GB of hard disk capacity, 1GB of RAM, and 1.66 GHz processor. A netbook with such a configuration can comfortably run a newer OS, web browser, and word processor and store a lot of music, pictures, and documents.

Since I intend to use my netbook for 8 hours a day, at most, I chose a laptop that has a battery which has a long battery life. Because of their size, some netbooks have keyboard configurations which appear and feel cramped. Hence, when I shopped for refurbished netbooks, I checked if the keyboard configuration was too cramped or not.

I looked for refurbished netbooks for sale on the Internet and in brick-and-mortar consumer electronic stores. However, I opted to purchase from the Internet because there were more models available which generally cost less than those sold in physical stores. I also decided to buy from the manufacturer's website because I didn't want to end up with a defective unit. I just made sure that the one I bought was covered by warranty and a return policy.
