In the coming article, you will learn how to create a website using the famous WordPress content management system.
Before we begin, you will first need to install WordPress on your local machine or web server. Most hosting providers offer tools, such as Fantastico, which will automatically install WordPress on the server for you, in just 5 minutes! If you prefer to install WordPress yourself, you will first need to have access to your web server, a text editor, an FTP client and your preferred web browser.
Once you have completed the install you can log into the admin panel of your new site. You can easily do this by adding "wp-admin" to the end of your domain name. Here is an example. Let's say your website is www.mywebsite.com you will enter www.mywebsite.com/wp-admin. Simply enter the username and password you specified during the installation and you will be logged in.
You will then see what is called the "Dashboard", which is the main administration screen. This section is accessible only by the administrator(s) of the website. In other words, if you would like to modify your website's contact info, about company text or any other pages, you can do this by getting into the admin panel of your website. There are different areas for you to visit in the diverse menu items located on the left-hand navigation bar. They are:
- Dashboard - Posts - Media - Links - Pages - Comments - Appearance - Plugins - Users - Tools - Settings
To change the look and layout of your site you can simply install a new theme (template). Simply go to the Appearance - Themes section. You can also download and install free themes and premium themes directly from this area. Every WordPress theme can be customized using software like Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator or Fireworks.
One of the reasons WordPress is such a popular CMS is because it has thousands of plugin's available to extend the functionality of WordPress. Plugin's are basically add-on's or extensions. For example if you want to add a contact form to your Contact Us page you can install the Contact Form 7 plugin. It will allow you to create multiple forms within minutes. You can install new plugins by going to the Plugins - Add new section of the admin panel.
